What Are Anti Virus Software, Anti Spyware Software and Computer Firewalls and What Can They Do For You?

Now that most people use the internet these days, it is a very good idea to make sure that you have good quality computer security software installed and protecting your computer. Anti virus software, anti spyware software and having a hardware or software firewall are now essential for everyone using a computer and here is an explanation why this is so.

Anti Virus software protects your computer from virus threats that can contaminate your computer and can slow down your computer, damage your files or even damage your computers hard drive requiring you to reformat your hard drive and needing to reinstall your operating system in order to get things back to normal. So as you can see anti virus software is an essential thing to have if you want to keep your computer healthy and free from viruses.

It is not enough just to install the anti virus software however, you will also need to keep it up to date in order to protect your computer from new anti virus threats, fortunately this is easy to do as most anti virus software programs let you update their anti virus files over the internet.

So what is anti spyware software exactly? Well anti spyware software is another kind of security program which protects your computer against all kinds of undesirables, such as spyware, keystroke loggers, malware, tracking cookies, dialers, trojans and unwanted commercial software. All of these things should be removed from your computer so that your computer security is not compromised. A good quality antispyware software program will protect your identity from unscrupulous people, hackers and fraudsters so that you can have peace of mind.

A computer firewall is either a software program or a hardware device which only allows authorised users to access your computer system and stops all unauthorized users from gaining access to your computer through the internet or a network. So a firewall stops malicious users from accessing your system and this is absolutely essential if you use the internet, especially if you have an always on broadband connection on your computer. So which is better to have a software firewall or a hardware firewall? Well a software firewall will give you good firewall protection, but the absolute best firewall to have is a hardware one because this is even harder to get past for a malicious user.

So in summary, if you do not already have an antivirus program, an anti spyware program and a firewall, then you really should look into getting these things as they will save you a lot of hassle and worry in the future.

Computer Traumas

Computer Traumas

 by: Ieuan Dolby

It has happened! Computer games have started to control my life on and off the screen. No complicated games like Age of Empires, just the simple one of Tetris. You know the one, where different shaped and colored bricks fall out of the sky and you have to arrange them in nice lines at the bottom? Hopefully with the end result of all colors matching in straight lines so that they can be removed and point gained.

Crazy really, it first happened many years ago when I had this stupid bet that I could get more points than the next guy. What that really means is that, "I am going to be up all night playing this game and will be totally incapable of staying awake in the office tomorrow, unless of course I play the game in the office as well". Thats what computer games do to us. We become machines where food and sleep are secondary items to all else. Just keep on playing.............till you drop.

I managed to get through that episode with only a slight increase in my weight and a damaged back from not having moved anything else except my two fingers for a sustained period of time. The latest episode though has created havoc with my life in more ways than one and I am getting seriously worried about it.

I had been playing that game in the evening for around three hours and had then gone to bed early for a dreamless and normal sleep. All okay and expected you say? Well, the sleep was but when I drove to the office the next day things started to happen that rapidly woke me up to the danger that I was in. There I was in my blue car approaching the traffic lights when all of a sudden I swerved into the other lane thus ending up stopped neatly behind this other blue car. Behind me, confused and irritated drivers with green and red cars tooted their horns angrily wandering what this maniac was doing. But I? I was happy in that I had managed to get the colors arranged and all I needed was another blue car and then we could have a full line................oh, no, what is happening to me? I sat there for a while shivering as it dawned on me that I had entered the game itself, it had taken me over.........I was a brick!

Yeah, and that was not all. I found myself one afternoon staring inanely at a house wall and following the line of bricks along trying to sort out in my mind which pattern was best and which was not. And at my desk I found that I had arranged all files and papers in a neat pattern according to color and size having totally disregarded any format associated with the importance of in-going, outgoing, urgency, etc. Extremely worrying to say the least!

I have withdrawn from playing Tetris and other games of that sort hoping that I will stop having these off the screen episodes in real life. In the hope that I can return to a normal existence without having off-the-screen battles. Do other people suffer from this or is it just me?

The other game that I played to have a break from Tetris was "Prairie Dog". One of those annoying games where you have a choice of guns and dogs keep on appearing on the screen. Aim and fire being the next step. Bang, Bang, Bang, another dog bites the dust. Yes, I know, pathetic really, but great fun. Volume up full, there I would be furiously firing at any movement, reloading and starting again and the dogs would make a strangled sound as I hit them. But once again I one day realized that all was not well with me, as I used to sit on my balcony and take imaginary potshots at cars as they appeared on the road. Or in a busy street I would say "bang, bang" and pretend that I had cleared a path for myself through the crowds.

I played that other game Age of Empires many times to. Love that game as it takes s kill and thought as well as two fingers and rapid movement and I became extremely proficient at it as time went by. My computer often struggled to cope with the size of my army and the enemies that I faced. I would sit there for hours on end, maneuvering, shifting, attacking and withdrawing till the sun started to come up on the horizon. It would be then that I would force myself away and climb into bed only to resurface two hours later, make a large urn of coffee and re-attack with a vengeance. Although this game never caused me to start charging at other cars on the highways or lobbing screwed up notes at others in the office it did cause me to take a good look at myself. What would happen if suddenly I started to do this sort of thing in real life? If I started to make deals with my neighbors to attack next door offices or ping elastic bands at the mail delivery boy? Ive stopped playing games now and have become a serious and boring "been there, done that and cured myself" type of person. I do have long and empty hours where I feel the urge to take up where I left off and I get extremely jealous when others talk about games or I see others playing them but I resist. I think it must be like smoking where one never loses the urge to light up and take a draw just the one! No, No, I cannot! I now sit there and lecture others on the dangers of playing games and that they should stop before it is too late. And they? They just nod politely and then disappear to talk amongst themselves............."must be and ex-player", whisper, whisper, whisper.

D-Link DGS 1224T - Switch - 24 ports - EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN - 10Base-T, 100Ba

The DGS-1224T copper Gigabit Smart Switch presents a cost-effective solution for the small and medium business to implement Gigabit Ethernet packet switching with easy fine-tuning of network performance and security. This switch includes 24 10/100/1000BASE-T copper Gigabit ports and 2 combo SFP (Mini GBIC) ports for flexible fiber Gigabit connection. Port trunks are provided for server deployment and network backbone attachment, while functions important for bandwidth-intensive applications such as Priority Queues and VLANs are supported to enable you to implement Quality of Service (QoS) and security without having to go through complex network management usually found in other managed switches. 24 Gigabit ports provide an inexpensive alternative solution to fiber-optic. Using your existing low-cost Cat. 5 copper twisted-pair wires as the transmission media, these ports allow you to instantly upgrade your servers to Gigabit capability without requiring you to install new, expensive fiber cables. All ports support 10/100/1000Mbps network speed auto-sensing, full/half duplex auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX plug-and-play. Ports can be combined together to create multi-link load sharing aggregated bandwidths to a server or a network backbone. To expand the network, you can also make use of the port trunks to eliminate bottlenecks between the cascaded switches. The switch allows you to combine between 2 and 4 ports per trunk to create multiple port trunks. The switch support VLANs to let you improve security and bandwidth utilization by limiting the broadcast domains and confining intra-group traffic within their segments. To segment up the network, VLAN-supported workstations and servers that are connected to the switch can be grouped into different Virtual LANs (VLANs). The switch supports Layer 2 802.1p Priority Queue control to prioritize network packets. Classification of users data priorities can be based on a data packet Priority Queue. This QoS function support allows you to run bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive applications and to attach video servers to the switch for videoconference.

Starting Up Your Computer For The First Time

When you buy a brand new computer, take it home with you, run through the installation process and then the moment of truth ? press the on button. It is vital that you realize just how important this very first step actually is. How this first step proceeds, will determine how you computer will run forevermore.

Many different things can cause computer issues including problems with the manufacture of the system components, incorrect installation of the software or human error that makes your investment turn sour. It is only when you turn on your computer and begin to use it that you know how well it operates.

Make sure that when you turn on your new computer that you watch closely. Does it start without errors? Does the monitor work properly without blurring or lines?

If everything is operating smoothly the computer should boot through several startup screens until your desktop appears on screen. If the process freezes, restarts or error screens appear, then you have a problem. You will then be free to run some of your own casual tests to check that everything is okay.

If this is the first time you have used the computer it is recommended that you test out the various technology components of the system such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and email and Internet. You might also want to take this opportunity to test out the drivers to ensure that all of your equipment has been installed properly. The drivers are related to items such as the modem, audio card, video card and printer. To test them you simply need to use the components themselves use the speakers to listen to some music, play a graphics intensive game or print a sheet of word processing. You will soon identify a problem when you are unable to get these items to run and this will allow you to get it rectified before you become too reliant on the machine and find it difficult to get it back to the dealer for repair.

Computer software are special programs that you can install on your computer or laptop that help you to undertake a variety of functions including word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing and email and Internet. Generally a consumer buys a software package in a retail computer store or in an online store, then follows the step by step instructions and installs it on his or her own personal computer or laptop. Sometimes the software comes as part of a complete computer package that has been purchased by the customer and it is installed at the store before the customer takes it home. In this case, you should check that each piece of software is working adequately so that you don?t need to call for technology replacement.

There are two distinct categories of software - system software which provides the basic non-task oriented functions of the computer such as the operating system and device drivers for printers, modems and scanners etc. System software also usually comprises of utilities such as disk formatters, file managers, text editors, and user authentication tools.

Computers also require application software, which is used to undertake specific user-oriented tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets and desktop publishing. Application software can consist of a single program, such as an image viewer or text editor or a package of programs that works together to accomplish an overall task.

How To Find A Good Computer Tech

When your computer is having definite issues and you have tried all you can possibly think of to repair the problem, short of throwing the computer right out the window, it may be time for you to contact a computer tech. Depending on your budget you have one of two options when it comes to getting a technician to help you with your computer hardware or software issues and these are free solutions or paid solutions.

If you can find a good computer tech using a free solution then that is great. In some cases, websites such as IT Help Desk, Data Doctors, Experts Exchange, or GeekSquad, can be sources of great technicians, if you are lucky enough to find them. The thing about these places and online forums that offer help is that you never really know if the person on the other side really knows what he or she is talking about or if they are just using big words to make it seem like they do. It could be very risky to take advice from someone on these websites. However, in most cases you might find that the solution is quite simple and they really are loads of help to your situation.

Paid solutions are generally the best bet. While they may cost you some money, you will typically get someone to your house, in person, to actually look at your computer. If you simply do not have a good solid computer tech in your area, you might want to consider a nationwide service that provides you with certified technicians that are both qualified and experience, who actually guarantee the work done on your computer.

The internet and yellow pages might be viable solutions for you as well. However, when going this route, you will want to make sure that you are getting someone competent, honest, reliable, and experienced. The following tips will help you understand what you should be looking for a good computer tech.

1. Take a look at the skills specified by the technician. You want to make sure that the tech has experience in the areas that surround your system such as your computer type, the operating system, hardware, network, and software.

2. Find out if the computer tech holds any degrees, certificates, or licenses. If not, question the tech on how many years they have been working in the field.

3. Manners count in this field. You want to make sure that the computer tech is accommodating and polite, as well as willing to explain the process of the repairs.

4. Professionalism is a key factor as well. You want the tech to look neat, clean, have appropriate dress, and show up on time.

5. Make sure the costs are competitive, comparable, and reasonable in regards to the costs of others in your area.

6. You want to ensure that the tech completes the work needed in a timely fashion and on schedule, with little leeway.

Overall, if you check out the above tips, you will have no problems in finding a good computer tech to help fix your computer problems, before you have to throw it out the window.

How to Choose a Computer Power Supply

Choosing a computer power supply is easy, provided that you are not making the mistakes that other people are making. One of the most common mistakes people made when building their own computer is to neglect the importance of computer power supply. They tend to cut down their budget on computer power supply and get the cheapest one around. If you really care about your computer system, you have to put in some serious effort to choose the best power supply.

The computer power supply is the energy source for the whole computer system. Imagine that you are not eating well for every meal, do you think you can still function well for all your daily tasks?

Power Rating

While people are discussing about the gigabytes of storage, 64 bit processing capabilities and the heavy-duty 3D graphics card, the only thing that required the most attention, but is discussed least is the computer power supply. What they have not realized is that the more powerful a computer become, the more power it needs. If you are building a high-end gaming computer, chances are you may need a 600 - 650W power supply.

Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF)

This refers to the lifespan of the power supply. It represents the average hours the power supply can perform before it fails. Most power supplies will have MTBF ratings of 100,000 hours or more.

Short Circuit Protection

When choosing a computer power supply, make sure that it is equipped with a short circuit protection feature. This is to prevent the computer parts from drawing excessive currents which might cause its internal chips to be burned.

Low Noise

The main reason for a power supply to be noisy is because of its inability to dissipate heat fast. The fan has to work extra hard to maintain the required temperature. When choosing a computer power supply, make sure that it comes with a big powerful 140mm fan or two 80mm fans to effectively dissipate the heat away.

Load Current (Maximum and Minimum values)

Each computer part requires different voltage and current to function. It is important that the power supply can support the various voltage levels and the current supplied.

Maximum load current - The maximum current that the computer part can accept for a particular voltage level

Minimum load current - The minimum current the computer part needs to be functional.

If the part is not getting the minimum load current from the power supply, chances are the power supply is spoiled.

Form Factor

Most of the power supplies in the market are of the ATX form factor. However if you are using a micro ATX computer case, you have to get a micro ATX power supply, else it won't be able to fit inside the case.

Conclusion

Power supply is definitely a computer part that you must pay attention to. When choosing a computer power supply, always get a power supply that has a higher power rating than what your system needs. In addition, unless you are willing to risk your computer to system jeopardizing power spikes and surges, do not ever scrimp on the power supply.

The Hidden Benefit Of Computer Certification

The web is covered with stories regarding the benefits of professional computer certification, and most of them are backed up with salary surveys and the like. While theres certainly nothing wrong with making more money and having better job prospects, theres one benefit of certification that many candidates forget about.

Confidence.

You cant pay your rent with confidence; you cant pay for gas with confidence; you cant pay for ANYTHING with confidence, right? So who cares, right?

Wrong. The confidence you build from truly earning a certification, whether its an MCSE, CCNA, or CCIE, cannot be purchased, borrowed, or stolen. It has to be earned.

What do I mean by truly earned? First, Im referring to those little documents out there generally referred to as braindumps. If you buy one of these things and happen to skate by a certification exam, did you learn anything? No. Did you learn anything? No. Are you going to be effective on the job? No. As I tell my students, when youre standing in front of a server or router that isnt working, and all eyes are on you to troubleshoot the problem, the correct answer is not B. There is no multiple choice.

Secondly, Im referring to the hope that the certification you earn was earned by taking a demanding exam.

Now, youre probably thinking okay, Chris has lost his mind. I should HOPE the test is demanding?

Yes, you should. Theres nothing more useless than earning a certification thats easy to get. Theres no feeling of pride, of achievement; furthermore, if everyone else has that certification, what value does it have?

I can speak from experience on this one. Those of you relatively new to the field may never have used NT 4.0, but the MCSE NT 4.0 was the certification that ended up causing a lot of damage to the value of professional certifications. EVERYBODY had one. The tests were repetitive and far too simple, there were no simulation questions, and the exams required no real hands-on experience.

As a result, my MCSE NT 4.0 had little value. I also felt no sense of pride in achieving it.

Thankfully, exam vendors and authors seem to have learned their lesson. Cisco exams are not easy to pass, and the initial Cisco certification, the CCNA, demands hands-on knowledge and experience. Microsoft is (finally) adding simulator questions to their certification exams as well, and the MCSE exams have gotten tougher as well.

So if you should happen to fail an exam along the way to the top and almost all of us do just keep in mind that if the exams were not demanding, they would have no value.

After all, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it!

The HDTV Market Follows the Same Route as the Personal Computers.

Sales of HDTVs are more than doubling each year, technology advances are announced daily, and it's hard to keep up with this heady pace. But it all sounds strangely familiar. Take a moment to consider the personal computer market of 15 years ago. Back in 1991...

* The computer you really wanted cost $3,000 or more;

* System specifications were a confusing mess of acronyms and jargon, such as EGA and VGA, MHz and KB, IDE and DRAM, cache and interleave;

* The technology was changing rapidly, making it hard to keep up with the differences between the 80386 and 80386SX and the new 80486;

* If you walked into a computer store, you'd likely be confused by the answers to your questions;

* If you went to more than one computer store, you'd find that you'd be told conflicting answers to your questions;

* Some familiar brands such as IBM had personal computers, but you also were confronted by a host of unfamiliar brands such as Swan and Gateway and Sager and Packard Bell;

* Your purchase was going to have to last you at least five years, so you wanted to make sure you bought a system that wasn't going to be obsolete overnight; and

* You didn't want to make a stupid mistake, but it was hard to get enough information to make a confident decision.

Fast-forward to 2006: this same list describes the current HDTV and digital TV market, only the jargon and acronyms and brands have changed.

Early adopters and high-end HD television enthusiasts either have the time and interest to educate themselves, or have the money to let someone else figure it out for them. These people rely on the specialist magazines and custom HDTV installation services.

As we climb into the fat part of the HDTV adopter curve, however, we encounter HDTV buyers who are more concerned with maximum results for minimum costs than with becoming experts in high definition television on their own. They need a source of independent, expert HDTV advice that will help them learn enough to make a confident, informed decision about their HDTV and home entertainment purchases, without having to invest a significant amount of time and money in the process.

Alfred Poor's HDTV Resource Center is designed to meet the needs of the "fat part" of the HDTV adopter market, providing access to information that is presented in clear and accessible terms that will help buyers understand the important issues so that they can make up their own minds about which factors are most important for their needs and tastes.

Alfred Poor has spent the last 20 years helping millions of readers cope with the confusion surrounding personal computers and related products, and has earned an international following in the process. He now turns his skills and two decades of experience to the HDTV and home entertainment market, with the goal of helping bewildered readers cut through the confusion, and make confident HDTV buying decisions.

Finding Quality Used Cheap Computers

The world really works in strange ways in this modern day and age. For instance, some of the most important high-tech devices in the modern world like computers are cheap and easily replaced. In a few months, a thousand dollar computer today can go for 400 or 500 dollars. You probably know that used cheap computers are everywhere if you've gone to any of the used computer warehouses in your local area.

However, used computers for sale may not be of even quality. You are taking a great risk if you buy a used refurbished computer. This is because those who work to refurbish computers do it as economically as possible. They can save money at every turn if they purchase the cheapest components.

There are times when used computers turn out all right. The refurbished computer you purchased may work perfectly for years. The problem is that used cheap computers are often lemons. You may be spending several hundred more on nothing when you try to save a few hundred dollars on used computers.

It would be wise to ask for a guarantee before you purchase used cheap computers. However, this kind of deals can be hard to come by because the people that refurbish used computers usually do not want to provide warranties. This is because they have no control over how long the used computers last.

For instance, the hard drive can be going bad without showing any outward signs. The needle will suddenly slip and scratch the disc after it has functioned perfectly for a little while. You may also lose the memory in the process because used cheap computers fail all the time. You can fall victim to one of these errors if you have failed to back up your computer. Months, or even years of work can be lost when this happens.

The best buy computers are the ones that are slightly outdated and not the used ones. You can get a great deal if you're willing to spend a little bit more money on a computer that is a generation behind. These computers work like new, even if they can be slightly more expensive than used cheap computers. They use outdated parts that have never been used before on these computers.

Unlike the used cheap computers, many of these computers will still run fast and last for a long time. You can save a lot of money this way if you are not driven to always buy the biggest, best, and newest unit in the market. You should stay away from used cheap computers, unless you can get them for almost nothing.

Cisco Catalyst 3560-24PS SMI - Switch - 24 ports - EN, Fast EN - 10Base-T, 100Ba

The Cisco Catalyst 3560 Series switches is a line of fixed configuration, enterprise-class, IEEE 802.3af and Cisco prestandard Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches in Fast Ethernet configurations that provide availability, security, and quality of service (QoS) to enhance network operations. The Catalyst 3560 is an ideal access layer switch for small enterprise wiring closets or branch office environments that are using their LAN infrastructure for the deployment of new products and applications such as IP telephones, wireless access points, video surveillance, building management systems, and remote video kiosks. Customers can deploy network-wide intelligent services, such as advanced QoS, rate limiting, access control lists, multicast management, and high-performance IP routing - while maintaining the simplicity of traditional LAN switching. Embedded in the Catalyst 3560 is the Cisco Cluster Management Suite (CMS) Software, which allows users to simultaneously configure and troubleshoot multiple Cisco Catalyst desktop switches using a standard Web browser. Cisco CMS Software provides configuration wizards that greatly simplify the implementation of converged networks and intelligent network services. The Catalyst 3560 Series can provide a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for deployments that incorporate Cisco IP phones and Cisco Aironet wireless LAN access points, as well as any IEEE 802.3af-compliant end device. Power over Ethernet removes the need for wall power to each PoE-enabled device and eliminates the cost for additional electrical cabling that would otherwise be necessary in IP phone and wireless LAN deployments. Maximum power availability for a converged voice and data network is attainable when a Catalyst 3560 Switch is combined with the Cisco Redundant Power System 675 (RPS 675) for seamless protection against internal power supply failures and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system to safeguard against power outages.

D-Link DGS 1216T - Switch - 16 ports - EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN - 10Base-T, 100Ba

The DGS-1216T Smart Switch presents a cost-effective solution for the small and medium business to economically implement high-speed Gigabit packet switching with easy fine tuning of network performance and security. This switch comes with 16 copper Gigabit ports and 2 combo SFP (Mini GBIC) for fiber connection. Port trunks are provided for server deployment and network backbone attachment, while functions important for bandwidth-intensive applications such as Priority Queues and VLANs are supported to enable you to implement Quality of Service (QoS) and security without having to go through complex network management usually found in other managed switches. 16 copper Gigabit ports provide an inexpensive alternative solution to fiber-optic. Using your existing low-cost Cat. 5 copper twisted-pair wires as the transmission media, these ports allow you to instantly upgrade to Gigabit capability without requiring you to install new, expensive fiber cables. All ports support plug-and-play connections with auto-sensing of 10/100/1000Mbps network speeds, full/half duplex auto negotiation and MDI/MDIX cross over. Gigabit ports can be combined together to create multi-link load-sharing aggregated bandwidths to a server or a network backbone. To expand the network, you can also make use of the port trunks to eliminate bottlenecks between the cascaded switches. The switch support VLANs to let you improve security and bandwidth utilization by limiting the broadcast domains and confining intra-group traffic within their segments. To segment up the network, VLAN-supported workstations and servers that are connected to the switch can be grouped into different Virtual LANs (VLANs). The switch supports not only Layer 2 802.1p Priority Queue control, but also other ways to prioritize network packets. Classification of users data priorities can be based on a data packet Priority Queue or the TOS field in the IP header. This QoS function support allows you to run bandwidth-intensive/delay-sensitive applications and to attach video servers to the switch for video conference. VLANs for Enhanced Security & Performance.

Find The Best Computer Printer Ink Price Ranges

However you can not find much difference in computer printer ink price ranges at the stores. Even you may not found the exact price to the same products in different stores. The discount price is the ultimate solution to get the better price in some cases. You can get the brand products in the price ranges from $14 to $42 dollars in 40 different stores.

Here is some instances to this kind of computer printer ink, in fact these cartridges has a brand name, usually the lower priced ones, are restore. Other branded OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) products are usually sold by companies other than the manufacturer which are usually cheaper. Even you will not come with any support that is why you have the right choice to own when you purchase an OEM product.

Though you need to be careful enough while you are purchasing brand name computer printer ink for a drastically reduced price. Any how some ads may not state that they are refurbished or refilled cartridges. Even you can get half the size of the standard printer ink cartridge. So be aware to these products.

Even you will not find any difference in the price of computer printer ink and the same exact name brand product although they are manufactured in same size and quality. In fact the price difference is normal to five dollars. You can get the difference in a red flag about to twenty-five dollar price.
How ever if you are going to purchase the cartridges, it will be the better deal on printer ink cartridges by purchasing a multi-pack. The only disadvantage is if you don't do much printing the ink in may dry out. So you should not go for this option if you only print occasionally.

Avoiding Spam, Scams and Computer Viruses

One of the most popular pages on about-the-web.com is about
avoiding scams, hoaxes and urban legends on the Internet
(about-the-web.com/shtml/scams.shtml). Here are a
few ways to avoid some of the perils associated with being
connected to the rest of the world.

As a general rule of thumb, beware of any offer that sounds
too good to be true. This applies to products being offered
on the Internet and especially to any unsolicited offer or
spam you receive in your email. Many of these are scams.

The term "spam", in case you don't know, refers to any
unsolicited bulk email. If it's not addressed to you, or
you don't recognize the sender, or you're being asked to
buy something or pass along questionable information, then
that's spam. My advise is to "can the spam" by immediately
deleting any email you receive from anyone you don't know.

The best way to avoid spam, is to be very careful about who
you give your email address to. My advise here is to set up
a free email account and to give this email address to
anyone you don't absolutely trust with your personal
information. It almost never does any good to fight back
against spam. Your best course of action is just to delete
any unwanted email.

A trick that has been pretty successful for me is to set up
an email rule (or filter) that automatically sends any mail
not addressed to me to a special folder. Most of this is
spam and can be easily disposed of.

In addition to spams and scams, the other thing to watch
out for on the Internet is hoaxes, urban legends and false
information. There are many of these floating around the
Internet these days. Beware of any email that asks you to
send money for any cause, or to forward the email to all
your friends. Almost all of these are hoaxes. An excellent
resource for information on hoaxes, urban legends and false
information is urbanlegends.about.com/index.htm

Another category of hoaxes involves virus warnings. If you
receive information that indicates you can get a computer
virus from doing anything except opening an email
attachment or running an application, then this is probably
false information.

Most computer viruses are spread by users opening email
attachments that contain the virus. NEVER OPEN AN EMAIL
ATTACHMENT THAT YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING. Even if you know
the sender, make sure the attachment is legitimate before
opening it. It is much safer to delete any questionable
attachments and ask the sender to resend them than to
assume that the sender intended to send that email.

Your best defenses against computer viruses are: 1) caution
in downloading programs from questionable sources,
2) regularly scanning your drive with virus protection
software, and 3) backing up all your important data to a
different drive or media (floppy, Zip or CD-ROM) as soon as
possible. By doing all of these, if your system does get
infected, you can restore it with a minimum of hassle.

Always check out any offer or information you receive
before sending any money or forwarding the information
to someone else. That way you can rest easy knowing you
aren't getting scammed or passing along an urban legend.
