How to Protect Your Computer from Killer Spyware / Adware

Definitions

The computer world is full of threats. In the past, these threats typically consisted of spam, viruses and worms, but a new threat is here to stay, killer spyware and adware! Spyware is defined as software that transmits your confidential information to a third party without asking you for permission. In addition to the obvious violation of your privacy by submitting your web browsing history, spyware companies can also use these your private information to send you spam. Even worse spyware software sometimes collects very sensitive information such as your username and passwords! Adware, another new threat to the online community, displays advertisements on your computer typically in exchange for so-called ?free? software. These advertisements can even inexplicably pop-up on your computer display when you're not using your computer!

Spyware Techniques

Typically killer spyware and adware use two techniques to infiltrate your computer. The most common method of getting spyware and adware installed is to trick you into installing it yourself! Yes, that's right, if you think you have a spyware problem, more than likely your the cause of the problem. Links to spyware can very deceptive and the author has fallen victim himself. However, identifying the techniques used by the spyware makers will help you to minimize spyware intrusions. One common method of spyware intrusion is opening a pop-up windows with a cancel button. When you inadvertently click the cancel button, low and behold spyware has been installed! Even trickier, the pop-up window might have a fake windows title bar which installs the killer software when you try click the fake X to close the window. Tip #1, always use a good pop-up blocker! As you can see, spyware makers are very tricky and they're out to find every technique they can to get their software on your computer, so be weary of any pop-up window and always look at file sizes when downloading. If the file seems too small to be what it claims to be, then it is more than likely spyware or even worse a virus. One sure sign that your computer is infected with spyware or adware is when your browser settings get hijacked. Typically, spyware and adware will change your default home page or search engine, so if you see your homepage change without your intervention you're computer has more than likely been infected.

Free Software = Adware

Adware manufactures typically use supposedly completely free software to infiltrate your computer system. However, when you install the free software, it will tell you that the free software will also install other depective programs in their terms and conditions, which of course you agree to without reading! File sharing software is notorious for both killer spyware and adware, so be warned! Sometimes it is best is pay for good software because you really get what you pay for. It is the author's opinion that most ?free? software nowadays consists of some form of spyware, adware or spamming technique. It's really worth the money to pay for decent software when you need it. If you think you're really found completely free software without the inclusion of adware, do a quick search for the program title and the keywords adware or spyware. If your search comes up empty, you just might have found a diamond in the rough.

Spyware and Adware Signs

Killer spyware and adware is most often noticed when your computer slows down or your computer crashes unexpectedly. Instability problems or a hijacked web browser are sure signs that you have a major spyware or adware problem. Don't let unscrupulous individuals control your computer or view your browsing history, install a good spyware / adware removal tool today.

Tim Manasterski has worked in the IT field since 1991. Please visit his website for more information about finding and removing all forms of spyware and adware.

Signs Your Computer Registry and You Are In Trouble

' Overviews various indicators that a computer registry has been compromised outlining why and how files, applications and computer hardware react the way they do when a corruption or security breach has occurred or is in progress.

The last thing you want to do is be connected to the Internet or for that matter, networked into another computer that is Internet accessible without any form of computer security in place. You need to safeguard your computer at all costs to avoid spyware, adware, malware, spamming, viruses, worms trojans and 100's of other things and terminology that deliver havoc to your computer's operating system. The purpose, intent, directive, mission, modes' operandi (whatever you want to call it) of operating system disruption is multifarious in nature. It could be criminal intent, malicious, prank, spying, diversionary, bridging, dominating, altering and (once again) a thousand other tactics. The bottom line is if you don't value your computer's operability you'll be a victim of actionable intent that could result in the loss of a perfectly good computer, your identity, financial data, privacy or all the above and more.

You took the time to learn how to use your computer and hopefully along the way you also learned not only how to keep it optimized but you and it safe as well. If you think problems only happen to everyone else, you are living in a vacuum! Your computer is an IP address that has nothing to do with your face, character or honest disposition. Your computer is electronic in nature and it depends upon you to keep you both functional and secure. Yes, the computer is brilliant but the one thing that sets you aside from the high speed logic of your computer is that at this point in time; you have the additional intelligence it has not and that is - common sense. With this in mind, that makes you the doctor and the computer a patient needing care, concern and nurturing.

So doctor, here are some sure signs the patient (your computer) is suffering and needs a good quality course of care. Another words it's infected with a virus, worm, malware, etc. etc.

1. You computer is running significantly slower, taking much longer to display webpage, takes forever to open a program, application or save a file.

2. You type in a specific URL address and end up somewhere else or, you do nothing and a webpage not requested suddenly appears as if perhaps a hacker has preselected your browsers' destination.

3. Random error messages (iexplorer has to be closed, DLL error, System 32, svchost, Kewrnel 32, etc.) begin to appear. Strange Windows warnings such as such as Info, Error or Question Boxes appear asking yes/no questions or solicit you to hit an OK Button.

4. Your browser homepage suddenly changes (different wallpaper, displays another picture from your computer data files or a picture you've never seen before), inverts, flips upside down, blinks, changes colors, lettering appears in reverse, or the monitor turns itself on and off etc.

5. You notice new icons appearing at the bottom of your screen, perhaps new items you know you didn't add suddenly appear on your favorites menu, there have been additional toolbars added to your browser or, your taskbar disappears completely.

6. A mass of popup advertising begins to appear even though the browser is not open or you get popups on pages your are familiar with and know do not normally display a pop over, pop under or exit pop up.

7. Your computer keyboard functions incorrectly - keys don't work, clicking on a link does nothing, tab key is dysfunctional, you can't use the Ctrl+Alt+Del function to end some task or any given program or process.

8. Your computer mouse seems to go haywire ' it begins leaving trails, the pointer disappears from the computer screen, the right and left mouse buttons reverser their functions, the mouse moves across the screen by itself.

9. The sound volume on your computer changes levels indiscriminately; your speakers start or stop working by themselves as if intentionally being turned on and off.

10. The computer powers down/ shuts itself off or restarts itself frequently. It crashes often for no foreseeable reason. The computer reboots itself.

11. The time and date of the computer changes by itself at times other then the automatic semi-annual time changes. (Spring forward/Fall back).

12. Your Windows" Start Button disappears and remains hidden from your ability to find it or you see unclear dialog boxes and/or menus.

13. Your account passwords are changed or someone else seems have access to areas once privy only to you or - you are suddenly denied access to an account or multiple accounts. Indication of a Keylogger Spyware (that record everything you type on a keyboard) resulting in purchases you may have never made, privacy invasions, identity theft, financial turmoil, unauthorized bank and credit card use or activations.

14. You notice indicator lights on the computer tower flashing or blinking when you are not on or using the computer. Indicates a hacker is using program files or accessing the Internet via your computer when it is felt you are sleeping or away from the computer or home.

15. The computer plays recordings of the sounds picked up in your computer room overheard by your computer's microphone. Your Webcam can be hijacked and used to spy on activity within the room it's located in.

16. When you reboot your computer a message reflects that there are other people connected or programs in operation you were not using.

17. Other people can read your private ICQ, IRC, AIM or Yahoo pager messages and other Chat Room instruments.

18. Your computer starts carrying on a conversation with you via text messaging, the computer begins reading the contents off your computer clipboard or, a chat box appears forcing you to carry on a conversation with some stranger.

19. Your CD-Rom Drawer(s) open and close by themselves. Disk drives and disks fail to open or operate properly. Disks are not accessible. Programs load or unload themselves or, the programs/applications do not operate properly.

20. Documents or messages print on you printer without your request, the printer stops functioning for no mechanical reason.

21. Not receiving automatic Anti-Virus or Firewall updates indicate your software is turned offFind Article, expired or has been modified.

This list in not an all inclusive listing of warning signs of a computer security problem and it wouldn't be fair if I didn't also acknowledge that some of the problems could also be a result of computer mechanical problems. A computer shutting itself off involuntarily could also be the direct result of a tower fan or a video cooler being inoperative or tower vents dust clogged per some examples. It is however a fairly realistic indication that computer security is a necessity.

Can Unwanted Ads Harm Your Computer?

Most people are now familiar with the threat that viruses pose to their PCs, but an invasion of another type of unwanted software, commonly referred to as ?spyware?, could be equally destructive.

Spyware is a general name for a large group of unwanted software that is downloaded and installed in the computer without the knowledge of the computer user. This type of software could range from rather innocent cookies, which keep track of what websites one has visited, to software that records key-strokes, and then sends this information back to the people who installed it, to enable them to extract information such as passwords, credit card numbers and other very sensitive personal information.

The large majority of spyware that is commonly installed on people?s computer is what is termed ?adware?. This is most often a piece of information in the form of a cookie, which enables the sender to display advertisements on the computer in the form of pop-up ads. These ads can become quite annoying, but are generally not harmful to the operation of the computer.

Another type of cookie that is very common keeps track of the website one has visited, thus enabling website operators to display ads to the person browsing their site, specific to the type of preferences that person browsing the sites has displayed in the past. Such cookies allow the websites that you frequently visit, to ?remember? your preferences, your name, user ID or other information, which may identify you as a returning frequent visitor.
This type of personal information is generally stored in a specific subdirectory or folder on the hard drive and can be relatively easily removed, either by yourself or by your web browser, which may have a ?delete cookies? button in one of the menu options.

Some more invasive types of software that can be installed on your computer without your knowledge are capable of changing your computer settings or preferences, such as installing toolbars, or modifying the default website setting in your browser. Usually these types are referred to as ?spyware? and are much more difficult to remove. The most obvious signs of a spyware infection may be the sudden appearance of pop-up ads for items or sites you have no interest in at that time and are not related to what you are doing, such as gambling or adult sites.

Frequently spyware and related nuisance software is introduced to your computer during installation of software that you actually want, but then somewhere hidden in the installation procedure is a message, or if you are lucky a button to select the option to install it. However most of the time this option is so well masked or tucked away at the end of the installation process, that most people do not notice it and then inadvertently install this spyware as well. Toolbars and unwanted utilities are an example of this.

It is therefore strongly advised during installation of software for certain tools, utilities or other applications, such as browsers, free software, audio or video software or other such specific applications, to pay particular attention to any selection options, such as boxes with tic-marks or radio-buttons, and make sure you know what you are installing. If you are not sure that you want that option, or you are suspicious about it, make sure to de-select the option. You can safely do this, since if you are presented with an option to deselect it, it is not a requirement for the proper operation of the software anyway.

The most dangerous type of spyware, also referred to as ?malware?, is installed on the PC without any warning at all.
This is the type of software that could collect keystrokes from your computer (key-logger), to be used for credit card fraud or even identity theft. Another type could be dial-up software which uses a modem dialer to dial out to some number that charges outrageous fees for being connected etc.

Many of these types of software have components installed in obvious places, such as the Program Files folder, but then also have components installed in much less obvious places such as the Windows system files or the registry where they are very hard to find or recognize. Therefore if you were to remove the software from the Program Files folder, it would re-install itself and re-appear when the system is rebooted. For most people the only way to get rid of this nuisance software is to avail himself or herself to the assistance of either very specialized people or software, which is designed to do this for you.

It is therefore recommended that next to your anti-virus software, you also install an anti-spyware or anti-adware program on your computer, and make sure that the software provider also updates this software regularly. Letting such programs do their work on a regular basis will keep your computer clean and could prevent some nasty experiences, something we all could live without.

Important Facts About The Computer Hard Drive

Computers have fundamentally changed the way we work, entertain ourselves, go shopping and planning our trip to the other side of the planet. We store immense quantity of data in our computer hard drive. The capacity of computer HD's was literally multiplying over the last 20 years. Today hard disk drives of 200 GB and even 450 GB are not unusual. That means you can store all your computer games, store tens of thousands of music files or hundreds of movies in a single disk. You have before you several other considerations before you purchase a hard disk.

You can easily find cheap harddrives or used hardrives for PC and desktop computers through a variety of online sources. There are different factors to consider while buying a hard disk drive. The only thing most people would ever notice is the storage capacity. In the past home computers used 40 GB hard disks, but today they have almost become obsolete.

The next is Hard disk drive speed or speed of rotation measured in RPM and a minimum of 7,200 RPM is expected. The permanent data from the memory is brought to cache memory for quick access. You may require 16MB cache or more for playing all that video games you have bought. Then there is access speed. Internal hard drives have faster access (3 ms to 15 ms) than external hard drives (80 ms to 120 ms). However you may consider an external hard disk for security and backup purposes.

External hard drives now come with capabilities of up to 250 GB ensures you can carry files or any size over to different computers. They are connected to the computer by either USB 2.0 or FireWire.

It goes without saying that the hard disk should be compatible with the operating system you use. You need to be aware of the fact that most drives are formatted for Windows based operation. If you use Mac or Linux, you will be faced with compatibility issues. You will be required to invest in different software suites to make the hard drive compatible for your operating system.
