Is DVD Storage An Attractive Alternative For Your Computer Backup?Per Strandberg




If you have a computer for home use or for your business and don't take comprehensive backup for full protection then you are in the danger-zone.
Maybe you do not take any backup at all.

You can find in Windows a basic backup utility which are installed during the installation.

I should say for all Windows,but in fact it is not included during the installation of Windows XP Home Edition.

It is as if Microsoft thinks that data protection is not necessary for home computers and computers used by small businesses.

It is true that hard drives are becoming less prone to hard disk crashes.

But, if you consider not only hard disk crashes, but also virus infection, theft plus other treats, then you realize the importance of implementing a full-proof backup strategy for your computer.

Today many computers are equipped with a DVD burner, yet most do not use it to manage their vital data backup.
The amount of data you can store on a single DVD is several Giga Byte.

There are many types of backup you can make.

Here are the steps that I take myself to fully secure my data against data loss:

1. Disk image backup.
I use a disk image backup software and make a complete image backup of the disk on consecutive DVDs.
I also create an emergency rescue CD.

If I have a hard disk crash Ill use this emergency CD to boot from.

But, first I have to install and setup a new hard disk that is working.

Then I can recreate the data directly back from this backup stored on the DVDs.
This work is made fast and without the need to spend time installing both the operation system and the backup software.
Everything is instead copied directly into the hard disk from the DVDs.

2. Full hard disk backup.
I also use a data backup software and create a full backup of the hard disk on consecutive DVDs.

This is a standard disk backup. With this backup I'm able to restore any files and/or folders.
I can also move the data to another computer.

3. Regular scheduled backup of files and folder.
Here I use the same software product I use for the full disk backup. I make with this software regular schedule backups of the files and folders I work with.

In my case they include My Documents, Outlook emails and other files that are modified over time.
I do this by keeping a permanent rewritable DVD inside the DVD burner.
I then rotate a number of DVDs for this purpose so I can keep copies away from the computer.

Whenever I install important new programs from the Internet or I make other major changes to my system Ill also create a new disk image backup and a full hard disk backup.

You should use a DVD burner that is built for rewritable DVDs.
Unfortunately there are several competing DVD standards on the market.

The DVD-R, DVD-R and DVD-RAM standards supports DVDs which only can be written to once and cant be reused and those standards should be avoided.

The DVD player should instead support at least one rewritable DVDs standard.
Either DVD-RW or DVD+RW.

Conclusion:
I use regular schedule backup to backup the data files I work with on a daily basis.

Ill make a disk image backup so that in case of a hard disk failure I will be back in business fast.

I also create a full disk backup so that I will be able to restore individual files or folders. It makes it also possible to move the data to another computer.

The case of Point Solutions Ltd v Focus Business Solutions Ltd and Another [2007], which was heard in the Court of Appeal, involved a claimant who carried on business as a provider of computer software services, and in particular software for the creation and use of electronic application forms for provision to the financial services sector.

At the material time the defendants had for a number of years been the dominant supplier in that market. In April 2001, the claimant and the defendants entered into an outsourcing agreement under which the claimant carried out work for the defendants, work which included a review of a module in the defendants? Goal software. In order to carry out that work, the claimant was provided with three modules of the defendant?s Goal software.

In the course of its business the claimant supplied a product known as Acuo Software, a product which had been developed over a period between 2 July 2001 and August 2002. The development of Acuo Software was in response to an approach from CMI, a well known pension provider.

In October 2001, the outsourcing agreement between the claimant and the defendants came to an end. Apparently, the defendants had learned that the claimant had been awarded the CMI contract, for which the defendants had made an unsuccessful bid, and that the claimant intended to bid for a different contract with H (the parent company of CMI) in direct competition with the defendants.

The defendants asked for the return of the three modules of Goal software. The claimant claimed to have complied with this request. In October 2002, the defendants wrote to the claimant to:

?Seek confirmation of the provenance of the software you have developed in order to compete with [the defendants]?

The defendants also sought confirmation that the claimant had not undertaken any copying of the defendants' Goal software or solutions. The claimant replied, confirming that it had not copied the defendants' software, and offered to make voluntary disclosure (to a mutually agreeable third party) of material that would confirm that there had been no copyright infringement.

The parties agreed to the identity of the experts to be instructed, and terms of reference on the basis of which they should be asked to act. However, the matter did not progress. Eventually, in December 2004, the claimant commenced proceedings seeking a declaration of non-infringement of copyright. It was directed that an expert's report be obtained, however the parties failed to comply with that direction. The judge refused to grant the relief sought, saying that she had been asked to make a declaration that software, which she had not yet seen, did not infringe any copyright in another software product which she had also not yet seen. She went on to hold that copyright had not yet been demonstrated with regard to such software.

The claimant appealed. It submitted on appeal:

- That the judge was wrong to find that the claimant had failed to establish on the balance of probabilities that it did not copy the defendant's source code in creating the Acuo Software;

- That the judge had erred in finding that there was no utility in making a declaration even if there had been no copying; and

- That her finding that she would have exercised her discretion against granting a declaration even if she had found in its favour on the issue of non-infringement was perverse.

The appeal would be dismissed.

The claimant had not shown that the judge was wrong in finding that it had failed to establish on the balance of probabilities that it had not copied the defendants' source code in creating the Acuo Software. Therefore, the other two grounds did not arise.

It is interesting to note that a judge should be slow to allow proceedings of this nature to be brought to trial in circumstances where the parties have chosen (for tactical and forensic reasons) to disregard directions already given for the provision of the expert assistance needed if the court is to decide the real question in dispute.

There were predictions that famous dead actors might even be brought back to life to play in new movies.

Who can forget the way the world was frozen with the threat of the "Millennium Bug"? While people around the globe should have been counting down to a phenomenal celebration, we were too busy preparing for certain doom and gloom beset by a computer virus. Of course, the clock struck twelve on January 1, 2000 and a new millennium quietly began, bug-free.

Those unfortunate enough to have had to deal with a computer virus knows all too well the damage that can be done. From taking on annoying quirks, to erasing files, to completely obliterating computers or entire systems, the powerful effect of a computer virus is nothing to sneeze at. Computer viruses pose real threats that can be minimal, or can cause worldwide destruction.

In computer security technology circles, the definition of a computer virus is a "self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents". A computer virus behaves in a manner similar to a biological virus, which spreads by inserting itself into living cells.

Extending the analogy, the insertion of a computer virus into a program is termed as an "infection" and the infected file (or executable code that is not part of a file) is called a "host". Viruses are one of several types of malicious software, also known as "malware". The term "virus" is often extended to refer to worms, Trojan horses and other sorts of malware. These are less common than they used to be, however, so the inclusion of these types of malware can be confusing to computer users. This confusion can have serious implications, as it can lead to a focus on preventing one genre of malware over another, potentially leaving computers vulnerable to future damage. The basic rule holds that computer viruses can only damage software, not hardware.

Viruses have targeted in the following types of hosts:

* Boot sectors of floppy disks; hard disk partitions.

* Master boot record of a hard disk.

* Binary executable files (.COM-files and .EXE-files in MS-DOS; portable executable files in Microsoft Windows; ELF files in Linux).

* General-purpose script files (batch files in MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows; shell script files on Unix-like platforms).

* Application-specific script files (Telix scripts).

* Documents containing macros (Microsoft Word documents).

A computer virus by nature is destructive, but others are created solely for the annoyance factor. Some viruses pester computer users with a delayed payload, also known as a "bomb". For example, a bomb virus might display a message on a specific day, or wait until it has infected a certain number of hosts. A time bomb occurs on a particular date or time, and a logic bomb occurs when the computer user takes an action that triggers the bomb. However, the predominant negative effect of viruses continues to be their uncontrolled self-reproduction, which wastes or overwhelms computer resources.

To hinder the continuous spread of computer viruses, programmers have created anti-virus software. However, a fast infector can infect every potential host file that it's able to access. This presents a special problem to anti-virus software. A virus scanner will perform a system-wide scan, accessing every potential host file on the computer. If the virus scanner fails to notice that a virus exists in the computer's memory, the virus can "piggy-back" on the virus scanner, and infect every file that is scanned. Fast infectors rely on their incredible spreading rate. To combat the problem, certain anti-virus software programs, like the well-known Spyware, are expanding to cover worms and other threats.

Like the potential devastation of the Millennium Bug in 2000, computer viruses continue to present a real threat to single users and corporate networks alike.

The Hidden Costs of Computerizing Credit and Collection Departments

Most credit departments in America today have become computerized. The credit analysts and collection specialists have been replaced by customer service representatives. The receptionist has been replaced by an obnoxious sounding electronic voice. All these changes have come at a cost to you, the consumer.

When applying for credit, the consumer is now to reduced to a set of numbers that are entered into a computer. Based upon a specific formula, the request for credit is either accepted or denied. Each customer service representative in the credit department is issued a generic set of instructions, and granted an equal amount of authority regarding how to handle every request. In the collection department, the customer service representatives are also issued generic instructions about how to handle disputed claims.

In collection departments many times, extension and deferral requests are now handled by computers . Injecting technology into both of these departments results in financial and emotional costs to consumers. How many of us have designated thirty minutes of our lunch hour to contact one of our creditors to resolve a problem, and after navigating the electronic maze, have been told the estimated wait for this call would be fifteen to twenty minutes? We have various responses to this situation. Our first inclination is to hang up and get on with our lunch hour. This response is understandable, especially if we are sure that the creditor we are calling is the one who is at fault. Unfortunately it comes with the risk of damaging our credit rating and/or costing us significant late fees or finance charges. Another response is to wait on hold for fifteen to twenty minutes.

By the time we talk to a customer service representative, our frustration level is high, and we will likely will have to ask for a quick resolution because our time is running out. In most work places today, personal phone calls are not allowed on company phones. We are required to use our cell phones to make these calls. If it is necessary for us to spend sixty minutes a week contacting our creditors to straighten out their errors, we are using 240 anytime minutes of our cell phone plans. These calls account for over half of a 500 minute cell phone plan!!! In many cases we experience the ultimate in frustration when we spend thirty minutes of our lunch hour trying to deal with a problem, and we discover that the customer service representative we are talking to does not have the authority to handle our dispute. We end the conversation knowing that we will have to spend another lunch hour on the phone with that creditor.

Waiting on hold for long periods of time during a work day can cause people to compromise their jobs. Since people can ill afford late fees and finance charges, they feel as if they have no choice but to continue with the phone calls which cut into their work day. If contact with a collection department becomes too difficult, people who start the process in good faith, may convert to become people who do not care anymore. In many instances, being denied quick access to credit and collection departments results in customers incurring damaging information on their credit reports. One of the results of eliminating qualified people in credit departments in exchange for using generic computer driven credit guidelines to grant credit, is higher risk and more costly credit. Chances are that customer service representatives will not be able to solve problems such as a computer increasing an interest rate from 6% to 19.9% on a customer's bill because the payment is recorded as a day late, even though the payment arrived on time and was misapplied by the creditor's accounting department.

At best, it will probably take multiple calls to the institution to correct the problem. The number of credit cards issued to people that can ill afford to have them is another outcome of generic credit policies. Once again, the subsequent payment defaults on these cards are passed onto all cardholders. Due to the considerable sums of money generated by late fees, finance charges and increased interest rates instated after late payments, credit card companies can afford to carry substandard credit card holders.

Some of the results of eliminating collection specialists in collection departments are:

1) Generic instructions do not cover all collection problems.

2) Customer service representatives do not have enough authority to enable efficient solutions for some common problems.

3) Customer accounts become referred further into the collection process due to inadequately trained customer service representatives who cannot "think outside the box".

4) Due to computerization, it is rare to be able to access the same customer service representative twice. Therefore the customer has to give the complete account history each time he or she makes a call in order to bring the new representative up to speed.

5) When customer service is outsourced, the people working in the phone banks have no background on the accounts, and are unfamiliar with the original representations made by the company.

6) When outsourcing occurs outside this country, many times communication is difficult due to the limited English vocabulary of the customer service representatives.
Before technology was introduced into corporate America, the sales, credit and collection departments worked in concert. In the corporate environment of today, too many times the sales, credit, and collection departments live out the cliche that the "right hand does not know what the left hand is doing". The consumer is the one who pays for this chaos.

But with LCD monitors the resolution is usually set and cannot be changed. If you do lower or raise the resolution it may distort the image.

LCD computer monitors use less than half of the power a CRT computer monitor uses. But CRT monitors responded more quickly than LCDs. It will only be a problem when you use programs that frequently change images like some graphic software and games.

As far as the price CRT computer monitors are two to three times cheaper than LCDs of the same size. But if you buy an LCD that is 15" you have a viewing space of 15 inches. Where as the 15" CRT you have 14 inches of viewable screen.

That brings us to what size new computer monitor do you need? Generally a 17" LCD or 19" CRT will give you the most favorable and comfortable viewing area for most purposes. If you are an avid gamer or into commercial drafting or animation you may need a larger screen. Your best choice may be a CRT computer monitor when comparing the costs of the 21" models due to high costs of similar LCDS.

If there is no high voltage, then I will explain it in another article. How to confirm if G2 voltage present at the pin of the CRT board? By placing your positive probe (red probe) to the G2 point and negative probe to cold ground with power on, your meter should registered some reading. For your information, certain types of computer monitors, if you place your multimeter to the G2 point it would caused the monitor to shut down due to the caused of impedance loading of your meter. Assuming you measured a low G2 voltage say 20 volts dc (a good G2 voltage is somewhere between 250 ? 300 + DC volt), the next step you should do is to isolate the problem to see whether is the G2 circuit that dragged down the voltage or the flyback transformer focus/screen voltage divider that had gone bad. Switch off the monitor and desolder the G2 wire from the CRT board. Place your probe accordingly (red probe to G2 wire and black probe to cold ground) Now, switch on the monitor and begin to see the meter readout. If the reading you get is still about 20 volts or higher a little bit then suspect a defective flyback. You can also try to adjust the screen voltage control of the flyback. If it already turned to maximum then the flyback need to be replaced. You can also use a cheaper way to solve it. Use a monitor blur buster to add in and defeat the original focus/screen cable and use the cable from the monitor blur buster to act as focus and G2. Thus, with this method the newly tapped G2 voltage could be solder it back to its original location and you will get a display when the monitor is switched on! Now, what if the readout from your meter shown 250 to 300+ volts dc when the G2 wire voltage checked out of circuit? This is a very clear indication that there could be components that pulling down the G2 voltage to 20 vdc.
